My dad’s B5.5 2005 Passat TDI Wagon automatic was (very likely) totaled today when a woman ran a red light right in front of my dad on an icy road, resulting in him t-boning her car and destroying the VWs front end. He limped it to a shop but it was gushing coolant and, being a nearly 11 year old VW it’s probably totaled. A new plastic drip pan is $400. Seriously what the hell.
So the car my dad just spent $2k in engine repairs now sits awaiting the insurance adjuster and I’ve not seen him this dejected since his dad died. This was it. This was the only car that satisfied all of his ridiculous requirements. Lots of airbags, safe, heavy, full-sized, good fuel economy, reliable (ok maybe not that last one so much), can haul excessive amounts of shit (two mountain bikes inside the car is his benchmark). If he didn’t insist on a wagon he’d have several options as modern full-sized sedans with puny little engines manage to get fairly respectable fuel economy and are as safe as you can get short of a monster truck, but he looks to be leaning towards a Toyota Sequoia or Seinna, though he’s done no serious research as I think he hopes the insurance company will just fix his car (and ruin the value of the resulting hulk) because we are, of course, talking about the guy who paid $4k in two years for two major repairs on a 2000 Buick LeSabre with (at the time) 220,000 miles and a LOT of other minor issues.
Sigh.
RIP VW.

May your ever-polluting Eco-deceiving engine rest in pieces. Amen.

Rest in peace to the Vehicle who had half of its heart removed from a V10 before it was born, may the someone who put a high flow cat and no muffler while shoving 2 mountain bikes in the back enjoy the car to its next journey...
